Victoria Holt is the queen of Gothic Romance and Suspense genre. She wrote under many pen names most popular were Phillipa Carr and Jean Plaidy. I discovered this author when I borrowed the above book "Shivering Sands" from a classmate.
This was my first Victoria Holt novel and i was 15 years then. The cover of the book had a haunting looking girl with waves of water around her.It was this cover that compelled me to read I was still young and new to the world of books and this was a author and Genre unknown to me.I was in for a treat. It was the most suspenseful book ever and many years later after having read countless Holt books i can safely say that this is her best work.
The heroine Caroline is recently widowed and has come to work at the Stacy household consisting of the elderly patriarch , the housekeeper and the three girls and of course the hero Napier. Both the lead characters are likable. Caroline is more modern than most of the Holt heroines and very real and passionate not the inexperienced Gothic Heroine as is the norm. Napier too is a very sympathetic character. He is arrogant as expected but still makes us see the decent being inside of him.The other characters are also very intriguing.
The story comes alive because of the vivid descriptions of the roman ruins, the shivering sands and the English coast lending the tale a very sinister atmosphere.
I have read this book many times and Every time i discover something new. I highly recommend this book.
Rating: 8/10.
My Book Cover:
Back Cover of the book.
